EnergyCloud Collaborates with Amazon to Launch New Renewable Energy Initiative in England
Initiative will provide free hot water to households living in energy poverty using surplus renewable energy
EnergyCloud, the not-for-profit social enterprise pioneering the use of surplus renewable energy to combat energy poverty, has announced the launch of its first project in England in collaboration with Amazon, and award-winning Community Interest Company, YES Energy Solutions.
The initiative, which will be piloted this year, will provide free hot water to households living in energy poverty by using excess renewable energy that would otherwise be wasted.
Participating homes will be equipped with an EnergyCloud-enabled smart device. These devices use surplus renewable electricity, such as wind energy produced during off-peak times, to heat immersion tanks, offering residents savings on their energy bills while reducing carbon emissions.
YES Energy Solutions CIC, along with key partners will oversee the installation and integration of the smart devices, ensuring that participating households can seamlessly benefit from this innovative technology.
The launch builds on the successful collaboration between Amazon and EnergyCloud in Ireland. In 2023 alone, households in Ireland equipped with EnergyCloud devices were able to receive a free tank of hot water for nearly one third of the year.
David Nicholl, Chair of EnergyCloud England:
“This launch marks a significant milestone for EnergyCloud as we expand into England. By collaborating with Amazon and YES Energy Solutions, we are demonstrating how technology and cooperation can deliver tangible benefits at the household level. This builds upon the impactful work already achieved with Amazon in Ireland and showcases the potential of turning surplus renewable energy into a valuable social resource.”
Duncan McCombie, Chief Executive of YES Energy Solutions CIC:
“This is an exciting and forward-thinking project that brings real-world benefits to the households who need it most. By working with EnergyCloud and Amazon, we’re not only tackling energy inefficiency and fuel poverty, but also helping to maximise the environmental potential of the UK’s renewable energy infrastructure. It’s a triple win – for families, for the environment, and for our shared energy future.”
Alison Kay, Vice President and Managing Director, UK and Ireland, at Amazon Web Services (AWS):
“We’re proud to support EnergyCloud and bring this innovative solution to England to help address energy poverty, and reduce energy waste. This initiative is a great example of how cloud computing, renewable energy, and technology can be harnessed to drive innovation and create positive social impact. We are committed to making a positive difference in the communities and countries in which we operate, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with EnergyCloud.”
