EnergyCloud England Launched to Tackle Fuel Poverty Using Surplus Renewable Energy
EnergyCloud England, a social enterprise dedicated to directing surplus renewable energy to homes in fuel poverty, has formally been established.
David Nicholl, a technology entrepreneur with international energy leadership experience has been appointed as Chairperson of EnergyCloud England and will chair the board initially established under his leadership. Over the coming months, David will continue to expand the Board to help fulfill the important mission of the organisation.
“This is an exciting new development for EnergyCloud and I am delighted to lead the organisation as we seek to help tackle fuel poverty in England, through the use of surplus renewable energy. This follows the successful implementation of EnergyCloud projects in other regions, all with the aim of using excess zero-carbon wind energy that would otherwise be wasted.”
“For example, in 2024, across England, Scotland, and Wales, well over £1 billion worth of surplus renewable wind energy (5.7 TWh) was wasted.”
“This year already in the first two months, real-time data from the UK Wind Curtailment Monitor recorded 1,615,300 MWh of surplus wind energy, valued at £398 million, going unused. At the same time, 6 million UK households are currently in fuel poverty, according to National Energy Action (NEA),” said David Nicholl, Chairperson of EnergyCloud England.
EnergyCloud’s mission is to tackle fuel poverty by capturing surplus wind and solar energy and redirecting it to those most in need. By ensuring that valuable renewable energy is not wasted, EnergyCloud England will help households struggling with energy costs while maximising the use of clean, zero-carbon power.
An interim board has been established to lead EnergyCloud England, bringing together a team committed to advancing this mission. The initiative represents an opportunity for England to take a leadership role in creating solutions for surplus renewable energy, making sure it benefits households instead of being wasted.
At the meeting on 6th March 2025, the board of EnergyCloud England ratified the EnergyCloud Charter and agreed a suite of governance and operational policies for the organisation.
