‘Energy in Northern Ireland 2026’ report highlights the importance of a fair and inclusive energy transition

The publication of the Department for the Economy’s Energy in Northern Ireland 2026 report provides an important overview of the opportunities and challenges facing Northern Ireland’s energy system.

The report highlights the significant progress being made towards decarbonisation while also underlining the scale of the work still required to create a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system for everyone.

One of the key themes emerging from the report is the growing importance of renewable electricity. Renewable generation continues to increase and now provides a substantial proportion of Northern Ireland’s electricity demand. At the same time, Northern Ireland remains committed to achieving at least 80% renewable electricity consumption by 2030.

However, increasing renewable generation alone is not enough. The report points to the wider challenges associated with energy affordability, infrastructure, system flexibility and ensuring that the benefits of the energy transition are shared across society.

For EnergyCloud Northern Ireland, these challenges present an opportunity.

Every year, significant quantities of renewable electricity are constrained or dispatched down to maintain system stability. Industry and policy discussions increasingly recognise the need for greater flexibility across the energy system to maximise the value of renewable generation and reduce waste.

At the same time, fuel poverty continues to affect a substantial proportion of households across Northern Ireland, placing pressure on family finances and contributing to poorer health outcomes.

EnergyCloud Northern Ireland exists at the intersection of these two challenges.

Working with SONI, NIE Networks, housing providers and energy suppliers, EnergyCloud redirects surplus renewable electricity to households experiencing fuel poverty, providing free hot water and reducing energy costs while making better use of clean electricity that might otherwise go unused.

As Northern Ireland continues its journey towards a net zero energy system, innovative approaches that combine environmental and social outcomes will become increasingly important.

The energy transition must not only reduce emissions. It must also improve lives. That is why EnergyCloud Northern Ireland believes no energy should go to waste.
