Nearly 6,000 people sought help with energy problems from Citizens Advice Bureaux across Scotland in just three months.

Average energy debt has reached almost £2,700.

These are not simply statistics. They represent people unable to afford the energy needed to heat their homes, provide hot water and meet the basic needs of daily life.

As David Hilferty, Director of Impact at Citizens Advice Scotland, has said, Scotland needs bold, targeted and urgent action.

We agree.

A social tariff and meaningful energy debt relief are essential. But we should also ask a profoundly simple question:

When Scotland has surplus renewable electricity that cannot be used by the grid, why can some of it not help households experiencing energy poverty?
