Submission to Fuel Poverty Strategy England: Using Surplus Renewable Energy to Tackle Fuel Poverty

“How we can use surplus renewable energy to tackle fuel poverty in England”

David Nicholl, Chairperson of EnergyCloud England, speaking about the submission said, “I am delighted to put forward this submission, outlining how our solution aligns closely with the core principles of the current England’s Fuel Poverty Strategy by redirecting surplus renewable energy directly into the homes of vulnerable families facing unaffordable energy bills. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for launching this crucial consultation and for its ongoing commitment to addressing fuel poverty across England.”

“At EnergyCloud England, we believe that access to affordable and sustainable energy is not only essential for the environment, but a fundamental social need. Millions of households across England are still struggling, with 13.0 per cent living in fuel poverty in 2023, facing average energy cost gaps of £417 per household. Meanwhile, significant amounts of renewable energy are wasted every year. Our solution addresses this directly, providing cost-effective relief by ensuring surplus renewable energy reaches those who need it most.”

“Our approach fully aligns with the current Fuel Poverty Strategy’s guiding principles of prioritising those worst affected, ensuring cost-effectiveness, addressing the needs of the most vulnerable households, and promoting sustainability. It also has the benefit of very low intervention to properties and making an immediate impact on household energy bills, while householders could be waiting for many more years before their home is involved in a fabric retrofit programme. This would be many years of no benefit, continued fuel poverty, without the EnergyCloud solution. With approximately 2,700 deaths each year attributed to cold homes, according to Public Health England.”

“We would like to commend Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, Minister for Energy Consumers, and all of the team at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for undertaking this crucial consultation and for the ongoing commitment to tackling fuel poverty. EnergyCloud England stands ready to collaborate closely with government, communities, housing providers, and energy partners to ensure no household in England continues to struggle with fuel poverty while renewable energy resources remain unused.”
